1.4. Connecting to Ethernet

Plug it in!

1.4.1. Obtaining DHCP Lease

By default, the Ethernet port is set up to auto DHCP, which will automatically retrieve an IP address from a DHCP server. If your network does not have a DHCP server, you will need to find another network that you can use temporarily to set a static IP address. Internet Connection Sharing on a host PC may also be used as a temporary DHCP server.

1.4.2. Creating a static IP address

To create a static IP address, you will need to change a file on the Gateway.

  1. Log in to the Gateway to begin.

  2. Edit the interfaces file:

    root@080030717-00055:~# vi /etc/network/interfaces

  3. Delete the line

    iface eth0 inet dhcp

  4. Add the following lines:

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.1.134
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    network 192.168.1.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1

  5. Reboot the gateway from the command line using the following command:

    root@080030717-00055:~# reboot
